Solomon Burke, R. I. P.

One of the great soul/R&B singers, Solomon Burke, passed away over the weekend. I first heard of Burke as a young fan of the Rolling Stones, who recorded a number of Burke hits including “Cry to Me” (hear it here) and “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love.”

There’s a great YouTube clip of Burke and the Five Blind Boys of Alabama recording a superb but little-known song called “None of Us Are Free.” If that whets your appetite for more Burke, check the other offerings at the site.  And for still more,  see the appreciation of Burke from NPR’s “50 Great Voices” series  here.
