Discovering Leonard Michaels

One of the many pleasures of being a book reviewer, along with the celebrity, the groupies and the fantastic cash, is the serendipitous discovery of a writer you’d somehow missed. A few weeks ago The Essays of Leonard Michaels hit my desk along with five or six others that rolled in that day, and I’m glad I chose to pick it up and read a couple of the pieces rather just adding it to the “why did they send this?” pile. Immediately captured by Michaels’ voice and style, I called my editor at The Dallas Morning News and said this is one we should cover. My reasons are in this review that ran Sunday.
