Somebody once described intellectuals–or it may have been liberals, or conservatives, or college professors, or Mormons, or black voters–as “a herd of independent minds.” The same line could apply to the media: Most of the time, most opinions tend to group around the tallest part of that bell-shaped curve.
Once in a while, though, we see a bold spike off the chart. Recently, syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer actually defended the NASA astronauts accused of carrying out some duties while under the influence of booze. When I spotted the headline I instantly thought, “What? Is he crazy? No way you can convince anyone that chugging some ‘tinis and flying $20 billion dollars worth of government equipment can be justified.”
Then I read the piece, and you know what? It’s surprisingly persuasive. Have a look here and see what you think.
