R. I. P., Monster Pig

I’m not against hunting; in fact, I think that people who hunt for food and use the kill responsibly are probably closer to the truth of things, and less hypocritical, than those of us who hire middlemen to spill the blood.

But I still feel a lingering sadness over the “Monster Pig” kill by this little boy in  Alabama.   I mean, look at this picture! It’s astonishing, primal, almost prehistoric looking. We have so few wild things left in the world, especially on a scale like this. What a long life it had lived…think of the long struggle to survive and reach a size like that. For all we know, that pig may have been the largest of its kind.

Too bad the boy couldn’t just just brand his initials on it, or maybe affix a photo of himself to its shaggy flank.  (”Your Sign Here.”)

I know they’re mounting the carcass, and that will be an impressive sight in someone’s living room (if it will fit in the room). No word yet on the barbecue they might have with a thousand or so pounds of hog meat–at least this creature wouldn’t be wasted.
